Persevere with a Purpose

Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation,

continuing steadfast in prayer.

Romans 12:12 (NKJV)

There are times when we are fighting against a challenging disease, like cancer in its various forms, that it’s hard to keep on going. When the battle seems more like a marathon than a sprint. When our spirit is willing, but our bodies are weak. When we just long for the pain of the journey to be over, so we can get back to life as we knew it before cancer struck.

So what can help us persevere in the face of hardship? It’s comforting to learn that our all knowing, omniscient and loving Heavenly Father knows exactly what we are going through. Not a thing happens in our lives that He is unaware of or that takes Him by surprise. He knows our struggles, hears our sighs, and sees every tear that we shed. It helps to learn and remember when we are going through a season of suffering that a loving God has a good plan and purpose for whatever we may be experiencing, including cancer. His purpose for allowing us to experience hardship and suffering is intended to work for good, especially in the lives of His children.

“We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (KJV)

When we’re hurting and needy, even when we don’t understand how it could possibly work for good, these are the times when it’s even more important that we need to walk through this valley by faith and not by sight. Some may doubt God’s goodness when going through the storms of life. When they don’t clearly see His purpose in the storm, they prefer to live by seeing is believing, refusing to believe until they can see. Rather than refusing to believe until we see God’s purpose, it’s essential for us to exercise faith in God and live by believing is seeing. Even though we don’t always understand it at the time, that’s when it’s most important to believe the assurance we’re given in His Holy Word and totally trust that it is true. God may in time open our “spiritual eyes” and give us new vision, helping us to see it all more clearly through His eyes.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

One of God’s purposes in allowing His children to experience trials is intended, by divine design, to build up our faith and mature us as believers:

“We also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 5:3-4 (NKJV)

“Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.
